School scoops eco award
A Long Eaton school has been rewarded for its environmental work. Parklands Infant and Nursery has been given an Eco-Schools Green Flag award.

The award has been handed out after the school recycled a flagpole in its grounds, while pupils have been working hard to transform their daily routine into one that benefits the environment and saves money.

They have come up with simple changes like ensuring all unnecessary lights are switched off and that paper, cans and other materials are recycled.

It has led to a reduction in bills.

Eco-Schools is managed in England by Keep Britain Tidy. It asks children to set up a committee involving pupils, staff, parents and governors to hold a school audit that highlights areas that could be made more eco-riendly.

Parklands head teacher Judith Meller said: "Obtaining the Green Flag award is something that the whole school and its surrounding community can be proud of. Each pupil will be able to take away some degree of satisfaction in the knowledge that their actions have significantly altered their local environment."
