27 March 2012 Thanet Girl helps Friends of Montefiore Woodland clear litter Eco super-hero Thanet Girl has swept into action to help the newly formed Friends of Montefiore Woodland clear litter from woods near Dumpton. Last year Kent County Council handed over the woodland area measuring about 300ft by 200ft, to the people of the Sir Moses Montefiore Ward.
The woods, a sanctuary for birds and wildlife and a popular spot with dog walkers, had become neglected.
In response, the Friends group was formed, and at its first litter-pick on Wednesday, more than 30 volunteers trawled through the woods, clearing litter and cutting back weeds.
Lisa Hunt, one of the organisers, was delighted with the turnout.
She said: "We are a group of like- minded individuals who are interested in wildlife and conservation."
Asda supermarket provided the workers with refreshments and fruit.
Broken glass, plastic food boxes and even an old telephone were among the items cleared away.
Thanet Times' Thanet Girl said: "I must applaud the Friends of Montefiore Woodland for their hard work. They have shown great community spirit and are taking active steps in preserving the land for the wildlife, while making it a pleasant place for visitors."
The Friends of Montefiore Woodland welcome volunteers to join them in their next litter-pick on Sunday, April 15 from 10am to noon. For the full news article and to be taken to the website, click here |
