Eco youngsters are waste savvy
Litterbugs at Tewkesbury School found themselves being policed by their environmentally-aware fellow pupils.

Children in the school's eco-group took it upon themselves to make sure litter was being properly disposed of during Waste Week, a national initiative promoted by EDF Energy to make schools greener.

So, the youngsters hovered around the school's canteen to encourage pupils to put food packaging in the right bins.

School spokeswoman Lyndsey Woodward said the exercise, dubbed "lunchtime crunchtime" by EDF, focussed on trying to get children to put recyclable waste in the recycling bins and general litter in the normal bins.

She said the school was also looking into the possibility of the borough council collecting food waste from the site in the way that it already does from people's houses.

She added: "We're hoping this week will change the way we deal with waste. It's about getting the students to think more carefully when they throw something away."

Compostable food containers may be introduced at the school.
