21 July 2011 Welsh tidal power generator gets 6.4m funding Funding has been granted for the first full-scale tidal stream energy generator in Wales. The EU has pledged 6.4 million towards the project, which will generate green electricity from the coast of west Wales for homes and businesses in the local area.
In total, the DeltaStream device will cost 11 million and is expected to be installed in 2012. It works by sitting on the sea bed and using tidal currents to generate renewable electricity.
First minister Carwyn Jones commented on the grant: "Investing in renewable energy technologies is vital to build a low carbon economy and help drive forward Wales' ambitions to become a more sustainable nation."
He added that the project will help Wales to meet its renewable energy targets and create environmental and economic benefits.
Earlier this month, the Welsh Assembly delivered its first bout of funding under the Supporting Sustainable Living Grant Scheme, helping organisations and initiatives promote energy efficiency. For the full news article and to be taken to the website, click here |
