South-east London school children launch Big Tree Plant
KIDS from south-east London have helped to launch a project to plant one million trees in the UK by 2014.

St John's RC Primary School in Rotherhithe was the first school to take part in The Big Tree Plant at a special ceremony on Monday.

Local dignitaries joined children, teachers and staff from conservation group BTVC to celebrate a programme that will add an extra 1000,000 trees to Britain's built-up areas before this summer.

Janice Babb, headteacher at St John's, said "Trees provide a great habitat and food supply for birds, mammals and insects.

"The school are excited about helping to celebrate the success of the campaign so far and we're delighted the children can play a role in improving our environment for themselves and nature."

Keep Britain Tidy is also involved with the project and has a network of 'eco-schools' signed up in the UK that will plant trees this spring.
