As an example, we have provided below one of our TeachShare Blog entries. We raised the topic 'How helpful is your local authority in supporting your endeavours to become a more sustainable school?' and a TeachShare member replied with some very interesting and helpful information.

How helpful is your local authority in supporting your endeavours to become a more sustainable school?

By TonyMillar

Over the past 12 months I have visited many schools and have found that most would benefit from more local authority support to help with a range of environmental issues. I would be interested to know your thoughts. If my suspicions are correct and there is a general need for more support, with a big enough response we could start to demonstrate to ‘the powers that be’ that, at present they are not doing enough to help teachers. The students of today need to understand what to do, so that they take into adulthood a good understanding of how to lead a sustainable existence. Let us know what you think. Tony Millar

Last year we were awarded our Green Flag. During our bid we tried to gain support from our local authority with regard to recycling plastic and tin/glass. We were told that because we were classed as a business they could not provide fornightly pick-ups. During lesson time the children wrote to our local MP, Gordon Brown and even the G8 asking for their help. We received a reply from the Houses of Parliament and our local MP stating that this matter had been discussed. Since then nothing more. I regulary take two Year 6 pupils a few hundred yards down to our local tin recycling skip, with several boxes of tins from our school canteen. Our School has a recycling paper skip in the grounds. We have recycled plastic and glass but that means a journey of several miles to a supermarket as our local facility does not provide a skip for plastic. Hope this information will be useful to you and in some way help us! Jan Loonie (Teacher and Eco Co-ordinator at Crowton School, Cheshire)
