Keen and green
Eco-Friendly pupils at Fairburn Community Primary School were awarded a special environmental accolade for their energy saving activities.

The Eco Schools programme awarded the Great North Road school £green flag status£ after being assessed on innovative eco-exercises carried out over the last three years, including recycling batteries and mobile phones, building a greenhouse from plastic bottles and teaching green-themed lessons.

Headteacher Emma Cornhill said: £We are very proud to have achieved this award because teaching our children how to care and look after the planet is one of our school£s aims.

£We wanted recycling, saving energy and considering our carbon footprint to become an obligatory part of our school£s life £ which it has.

£The children have really enjoyed all the activities and learned so much, from growing vegetables to checking the schools£ energy bills.£

The school £ which has already received bronze and silver awards from Eco Schools £ has also received a 6ft green flag to mark its achievement.
