Billericay pupils design a garden to assist with learning at St Peter's
A garden designed by children will be helping school pupils to learn for years to come.

Youngsters at St Peter's Roman Catholic Primary School in Coxes Farm Road, Billericay, competed to come up with a winning plan for the garden, standing proudly in front of the school.

The garden has been created as a space to help pupils with their learning, as teacher and eco-schools coordinator Jenna Bollon explained.

She said: "The idea first came about in the autumn, when we thought a new garden could be a valuable resource for the school.

"The Friends of St Peter's decided they could help out and raised £5,000 to go towards it.

"We asked the children to come up with different designs and they all had lots of ideas about what should be included.

"The result is fantastic."

The winning design, created by Year 3 pupil Jessica Smith, contains safe areas for animals such as hedgehogs and birds, and plants designed to help insects.

It also has a sensory element, with strongly scented herbs such as sage and thyme, and plants with different textures.

Miss Bollon added: "It will help children with their curriculum.

"Learning subjects like science will benefit with this hands on approach."

Jessica, eight, said: "I was really pleased when they picked my design. I decided to make it with four different areas that would have different things.

"We had to keep the tree in the middle, then around it I came up with ideas.

"I wanted a place where hedgehogs could live, because they are my favourite wild animal.

" I like the wild meadow, which will have lots of insects in."

Head teacher John Peoples said: "It's going to be a benefit to the school and the children.

"This area was being wasted before.

"It used to have demountable classrooms on, but then they were taken away and this was just green space.

"Having the garden here will provide something useful and help the children to learn.

"The Friends of St Peter's were great and do a huge amount for the school."
