Berkshire schools renewable project receives major cash boost
A renewable energy project at a school in Maidenhead has been awarded £25,000 from EDF Energy.

The grant comes from the EDF Energy Green Fund and will help pay for an array of photovoltaic solar panels at St Edmund Campion Primary School on Altwood Road.

The panels will be fitted to the roof of the schools Early Years building. The technology is anticipated to generate about 30 per cent of the buildings electricity requirements and reduce St Edmund Campions carbon emissions by more than 4.5 tonnes per year.

Kate Foreman, Business Manager at St Edmund Campion Primary School, said: Were delighted that the EDF Energy Green Fund is able to help make this exciting project a reality as the school works so hard to promote sustainability and a one planet lifestyle. The £25,000 will go a huge way to helping us create this low carbon solution.

The Early Years building, which was built in 2008 for St Edmund Campions pre-school students, already incorporates many sustainable features, such as timber from renewable sources, a playground surface made from recycled rubber tyres and wall insulation made from recycled newspapers. Solar thermal panels have been installed to heat water for the kitchen and toilets and a ground source heat pump, which uses pipes to extract heat from the earth, provides a green way of heating the building in winter.

All funding is now in place and the solar panel installation is due to begin during the summer holidays, once an extension to the Early Years building has been completed, which will add a new classroom.

EDF Energy has awarded £4.8million to 270 renewable energy projects in the UK since the Green Fund was launched in 2001. More than £2 million has been given to 117 educational projects including schools, nurseries and colleges. The fund supports renewable energy projects which produce power from the sun, wind, water and geothermal sources that reduce greenhouse gases linked to global warming.

Mark Thompson, EDF Energy Green Fund manager, said: Were delighted to announce that St Edmund Campion Primary Schools renewable energy project has been successful in its grant application. EDF Energy is extremely happy to support what is a very innovative and exciting project. Thanks to customers on our Green Tariff, EDF Energy has been able to invest millions of pounds into small-scale renewable projects through the fund, all part of our commitment to diverse low carbon solutions across the country.

In all, ten projects have been awarded £239,868 in the latest EDF Energy Green Fund funding round.
