North West bids win sustainable transport funding
Four projects in the North West have been successful in securing funding in the first round of the governments Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

In all, 39 projects were promised a combined total of 155m of investment. All have been judged to be effective against the funds two key objectives of creating growth and cutting carbon.

Transport for Greater Manchester secured 4.9m for a commuter cycle project, whereby secure cycle storage space, complete with shower and bathroom facilities, will be built at key transport interchanges.

Merseytravel secured 4.9m to "facilitate sustainable access to employment" and Sefton Council won 1.6m for the Sefton and West Lancashire Visitor Economy Project. Cumbria will receive 4.9m for the Lake District Sustainable Visitor Transport Beacon Area

Transport minister Norman Baker said: "All the winning schemes have one thing in common they will help build strong local economies while addressing the urgent challenge of climate change.

"We have empowered local authorities to create packages of sustainable initiatives that are tailored for their local areas, and this is only the beginning."
