06 October 2008 Large scale UK trials for mixed plastics recycling A consortium of big names from industry and commerce are working together to step-up mixed plastics packaging recycling with large-scale trials. Due to start "imminently," the trials will be led by Nextek and include Sainsbury's, Valpak, Bowman Process Technology, Closed Loop Recycling, Linpac and CeDo. The pilots follow research by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) that showed mixed plastic recycling was "economically and environmentally viable". The controversial issue of how best to handle the plastic film portion of domestic waste will also be looked at during the trial. Film used in plastic packaging usually incorporates several polymers as this enhances the ability of the film to protect the foodstuff.
