17 May 2011 School celebrates third green award A SCHOOL has been awarded its third green flag to recognise their environmental achievements.
Tyn-Y-Wern primary school, in Caerphilly, was awarded the green flag as part of the Eco-Schools programme, which encourages positive environmental action in schools. The award was given to the primary school in recognition of its efforts in getting pupils involved in recycling and environmental initiatives.
Each class tends its own vegetable patch, harvesting produce including a 28lb pumpkin. Pupils designed and raised funds to develop a wooden storytelling area in the playground and a large school hall mural.
Regular walk to school weeks are held to encourage pupils to be more active.
The primary school has organised numerous recycling schemes and break-time compost collections.
And youngsters also took part in a water conservation study of the Rhymney river and celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight.
It is the highest award level available within the scheme, and has only been awarded to a small number of schools within the Caerphilly council area.
Year three and four teacher Caroline ap Hywel, eco coordinator for the school, said: Were extremely proud of all the hard work that the children have been doing. It has obviously been led a lot by the children.
The 33-year-old said: It has all just become second nature to the children. They dont even have to think about recycling and things like switching the lights off.
It is just embedded within the school curriculum. Its not something that we have to think about anymore. For the full news article and to be taken to the website, click here |
