05 August 2010 UK's first methane-powered car is no waste of time The UK's first car to be powered by sewage has been launched by a Bath company. Greenfuel in Monkton Combe has converted a Volkswagen Beetle so it can run on methane gas which is generated during the sewage treatment process.
And waste flushed down the toilets of just 70 homes is enough to power the Bio-Bug for 10,000 miles.
Greenfuel director Ingram Legge, who helped with the conversion, said: "It is very exciting, it effectively means that there is a viable alternative fuel that is almost energy carbon neutral that is available and should be available.
"It is carbon neutral and extremely clean from an air quality perspective.
"You are using waste to power a vehicle, which has to be a good thing."
In the future he said they would like to see refuse trucks powered by biogas and commercial vehicles.
He estimated that the cost would be 50 per cent less than petrol. For the full news article and to be taken to the website, click here |
