12 July 2010 National eco-friendly award for school A green school is weighing up how to spend its £1,000 prize money after being hailed as the most eco school in the country. St Edmund Campion Catholic Primary School has been championing the environmental cause for years by growing vegetables, which pupils sell to parents, holding G11 summits and using green ground source heating technology to warm its eco-building. It won the How Green Is Your School? gong by getting the most number of votes on a Facebook page, beating 94 other schools in the country, The Teachers TV competition was held to find the most environmentally-aware school and the school was visited by a camera crew to make a video of its sustainable methods. Patricia Opalko, headteacher at the Altwood Road school, said the award has given the school 'a great lift'. "The children are so excited, and have already started planning what the money should be spent on," she added. "Ideas at the moment include helping to pay for the installation of a biomass boiler to replace our oil boiler to more solar photovoltaics to reduce our carbon footprint and I'm sure there will be many more."
