09 July 2010 School wants to fly Green Flag A SCHOOL is hoping to gain Green Flag status after making environmentally friendly improvements on the site. Derwendeg Primary School in Cefn Hengoed has an active Eco Club that has been working hard to achieve the coveted the flag, which is part of the Eco Schools programme which is an international initiative that encourages pupils to engage with environmental and sustainable development issues. They have revamped the outdoor area and turned it into a green space that can be used by pupils and also encourage native wildlife. Head teacher Lorraine Hunter said: "It's great to see the children being so enthusiastic about improving our environment and taking steps to make the school more sustainable for the future. I'm sure these important lessons will stay with them for many years to come." The school now has a network of wooden framed pathways, a log circle and the throughout built a hazel structured 'den'.
