Schools get behind National Recycling Week
DON'T let Devon go to waste, the county's reduce, reuse and recycle partnership, has launched a new campaign for National Recycling Week which starts today.

Designed to encourage us to recycle old electrical items, the campaign was launched at the Brunel Road Recycling Centre in Newton Abbot with Cllr Gordon Hook, Scrapman, and Julie Bolam the site manager.

Scrapman was developed as a literacy resource for Devon schools by Resource Futures to teach primary children about rubbish.

When residents recycle old electrical items such as toasters, tools, and mobile phones at one of the county's Recycling Centres during Recycling Week, they will receive a reward token which can be used to benefit one of their local schools.

Twenty schools throughout the county will be taking part in the campaign, which has been created in conjunction with WRAP, the government funded Waste and Resources Action Programme.

Cllr Hook said: "Everyone knows that recycling old electrical items is far better than them ending up in landfill.

"Knowing that we will be helping our local schools by doing so encourages us all to get to our local Recycling Centre.

"Devon residents are rightly proud of our stunning county so doing something so simple to help keep Devon greener will benefit us all."

The schools with the most rewards in each region will win prizes of £500 worth of garden centre vouchers.

The primary and secondary school with the most rewards will each win £1,000 worth of garden centre vouchers.
