05 June 2010 School team wins place in final Pupils from Kemnay primary will also visit science centre
HANDS-ON pupils from a north-east school have gained a trip to Glasgow's Science Centre and a place in the UK final of an annual environmental innovation competition A total of 25 talented youngsters from Kemnay Primary School took the Big Green Challenge category award in the contest for schools in Scotland organised by oil company Total. An eco-dome was designed and created from old bed sheets and waste plastic piping by the primary-six team, who demonstrated its easily dismantled effort in action at the school's fundraising fair. The youngsters' collapsible shelter, braced with guy ropes so that it does not collapse in use, impressed visitors as much as competition judges. The creative pupils are now to head off to learn more, and pick up more ideas, through a June 23 trip to the Science Centre by the Clyde that was their prize. The pupils will also go through to the UK final later in the year. The school's deputy head teacher Graham Still said: "The youngsters are very chuffed with their success, and really looking forward to the Glasgow trip. They did all the work themselves and thoroughly deserve it." For the full news article and to be taken to the website, click here |
