06 May 2010 'Green Building' leads way in eco teaching TRAILBLAZING National Comprehensive School in Hucknall has unveiled an environmentally-friendly learning centre that is the first of its kind in the UK. Nicknamed 'The Green Building', the project cost £400,000 and has been officially opened at the Annesley Road school, which is a specialist centre for technology. Guest of honour was the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, the Rt Rev Paul Butler. The flat-packed, modular building is from innovative company Blue Planet Buildings, of Daniels Way, off Watnall Road, Hucknall. Its design came about through the need to quickly set up buildings as command centres in disaster zones. But the system has evolved to offer many uses while also being eco-friendly. The building features a 'skin' that incorporates 112 solar panels. These produce an estimated 1.2 kilowatts of electricity that is worth about £18,500 a year when sold back to the National Grid. It is the third-largest solar installation in the UK. For the full news article and to be taken to the website, click here |
